Ohio Department of Transportation Director
Gordon Proctor to speak at 2003 CJEC Banquet

The Canton Joint Engineering Council is pleased to announce Ohio Department of Transportation Director Gordon Proctor will be the 2003 CJEC Banquet keynote Speaker.
ODOT Director Gordon Proctor will be the 2003 CJEC Banquet Keynote Speaker Proctor was appointed director of the Ohio Department of Transportation on May 19, 1999 by Governor Bob Taft. As director, Proctor oversees Ohio's $2.1 billion annual transportation program. The department is responsible for designing, building and maintaining Ohio's nearly 20,000 miles of state, U.S., and interstate highways. Ohio has the second largest inventory of bridges, the fourth largest interstate highway system and the tenth largest highway system in the nation.
ODOT also helps coordinate and develop Ohio's public transportation and aviation programs. These include 56 public transit systems and nearly 200 public airports.

Previously, Proctor served as ODOT's interim director since January and as chief of staff from 1996 to January 1999. As chief of staff he was directly involved in the creation of the Transportation Review Advisory Council (TRAC). The nine-member TRAC is an independent body, responsible for the funding prioritization of ODOT's major new construction projects. Proctor also spearheaded the establishment of ODOT's criteria-driven, rational project selection process used by the TRAC in their funding decisions.

Prior to becoming chief of staff, he served as deputy director of ODOT's Division of Multi-modal Planning and was the administrator of the Office of Planning and Environmental Services.. Proctor joined the department as a legislative liaison in 1991. He also spent more than a decade as a news reporter and editor for newspapers and wire services in Colorado, Ohio, Arkansas and Massachusetts.

Proctor is a former Peace Corps volunteer and has a bachelor's degree in Journalism from Ohio University. He also has a master's degree in Public Administration with a specialization in natural resource policy from The Ohio State University.

Proctor and his wife Brenda and daughter live in Dublin, Ohio.
